What Do Bubble Wrap and Mouth Guards Have In Common

Earlier in the month we shared with you the importance of mouth protection when participating in recreational sports. We bet you and your kids wear helmets, shin guards and lots of padding so why not take care of your teeth and gums. If our blog post didn’t change your mind about mouth guards, maybe this video from the American Academy of Pediatrics will. It will certainly make you smile.

Dr. Reagin provides all of his orthodontics patients with a set of mouth guards, but if you are not a patient he can help you too! Call us today and make an appointment to have mouth guards made just for you!

Braces Friendly Food Ideas For Memorial Day

Do you have a new braces wearer in your family? With Memorial Day this weekend you might be worried about what they are going to eat at the neighborhood cookout. Carrots, pretzels, and caramel brownies are not the best choices for a someone with braces.

At Reagin Orthodontics we recommend you avoid hard, crunchy foods to prevent damage to your braces, but chances are your mouth may be a little tender and you won’t want those foods anyway. Don’t worry, there are lots of delicious options and we’ve created a Pinterest board to help you find something you can take to the cookout that everyone will enjoy!

Here are a few of our favorites!

Reagin Orthodontics Introduces iTero

No, iTero is not a new Apple product your kids are going to be asking you for! It is the latest in technology for dental molds and impressions! We are always on the lookout to improve our patients experience and service and iTero will certainly do that!

iTero and Invisalign

The iTero is a digital scanner that will allow Dr. Reagin to take a 3-D digital image of a patient’s teeth and gum tissue! It is highly accurate and will not cause the annoying gag reflex or leave a bad taste in your mouth! Invisalign® patients can say goodbye to the goop and bad tasting dental plaster beginning in May.

iTero works by utilizing lasers and optical scanning to capture 3-D images of your teeth and bite. The detail is astonishing. All of this is done by using a hand-held photo wand that records 100,000 points of light, 50 microns apart. The process results in a highly accurate image, less wait time to start treatment, less time in Dr. Reagin’s chair and a much more comfortable process for the patient!

The best part of all of this fantastic technology is that the patient is provided with a clear picture of what their teeth look like before, during and after treatment! That is pretty exciting! It allows us to make a very specific plan to meet your needs and you can actually see images of how our plan will change your smile!

Reagin Orthodontics and Smiles Change Lives

R with Smile Face

Dr. Reagin is proud to be a supporter of the organization Smiles Change Lives, a non-profit that donates orthodontic services to families that cannot afford the full cost of braces. The organization desires to provide these children a chance at a different future. Since 1997 more than 5,000 children have been given new smiles through the foundation.

“There have been people in my life who have helped me along the way. There is no doubt that I am who I am today in part due to the unselfishness of others. By partnering with SCL, I can ‘pay it forward’ and help to improve the lives of children in my community,” shares Dr. Reagin.

Dr. Reagin was more than honored to be a provider and work with Bri’Auna Boyd. Bri’Auna is a delightful young lady and seeing her smile change was a joy to everyone on our staff. It really is true that it can be better to give than receive. She brought us just as much joy and we brought her!

The generosity of doctors like Dr. Reagin and hundreds of others who have joined SCL is what makes the program available to working families struggling. A family’s financial situation changes throughout the years. A child’s oral health and social development shouldn’t be compromised due to hardships.

Everyone Loves A Visit From The Tooth Fairy

Dr. Britt Reagin is in the smile business, but even an orthodontist can be upstaged during February’s Dental Health Month. Dr. Reagin is not too upset about it, though. After all, who could be mad at the Tooth Fairy?

During the month of February, the Tooth Fairy fluttered around Summerville elementary schools, visiting K4 and K5 classes to teach students about dental hygiene. Educating Summerville’s children about the proper way to care for their teeth is an important lesson that is taught in Kindergarten and First grade classes each year. A visit from the Tooth Fairy during this time makes it even more memorable!

Tooth Fairy

Who wouldn’t enjoy a visit from a real tooth fairy?

Her sparkly gown and wings made a big impact on the children, and they were very eager to ask questions! Of course, the obvious questions were: what does she do with all the teeth she collects, could they see her pretty shoes, and do the wings make her fly? The most important question though – where does she get her stash of cash that makes the kids so happy?

Summerville’s Tooth Fairy just happens to be Greer Reagin, Dr. Reagin’s wife. Her infectious smile and genuine love for children brightened many Summerville students’ days while providing them with important dental hygiene lessons and a Tooth Fairy progress report, where they can keep track of when they lose each tooth.

Nothing but smiles here!

Ask Mrs. Reagin and she says the children give her joy not the other way around. “I absolutely ADORE dressing up as the Tooth Fairy and making these kindergarteners smile. If my wings were real, I would literally be on cloud nine. That’s how much joy these kids bring to me!”

The Tooth Fairy will visit schools throughout the remainder of the 2013-2014 academic year, as well as during the 2014-2015 academic year. If you would like her to visit your child’s school ask your teachers and administrators to contact Reagin Orthodontics at 871-4411 or  greer@drorthodontics.com to arrange a visit.

Protecting Your Child’s Smile

Spring and summer usher in a multitude of fun sports and outdoor activities. Having so much fun inevitably leads to a few bumps and bruises, but it is easy to protect you or your child’s smile.

Reagin Orthodontics

Many sports require facial and mouth protection such as helmets, protective eyewear, face shields and mouth guards, but even if mouth guards are not required they can be beneficial to the participant. Soccer, skateboarding, volleyball, rollerblading, basketball and any type of sport where there is the potential to fall or collide with another player a mouth guard can prevent damage to the soft tissues of the mouth, broken teeth or lost teeth.

Dr. Reagin and the team at Reagin Orthodontics provide mouth guards for all of their orthodontia patients, but did you know they can fit anyone for a custom mouth guard? You do not have to be a current patient of the practice in order to make an appointment for a mouth guard. Many people shy away from mouth guards, because they think they will be uncomfortable, in the way or make communicating with other players difficult.

According to The American Dental Association, “A properly fitted mouth guard will stay in place and be easy for users to talk and breathe while wearing.”

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry states that sports accidents reportedly account for 10 to 39 percent of all dental injuries in children and are most often caused by direct hits with a hard object, such as a puck or ball, and player-to-player contact.  Many of which could be prevented by wearing a mouth guard. So why wouldn’t you or your child wear one? Spread the word to your friends that Dr. Reagin would be happy to fit them also even if their child is not in braces currently! They won’t regret it!

Call us today to make an appointment for a custom mouth guard!

National Facial Protection Month is sponsored by the Academy for Sports Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Association of Orthodontists.
