Common Problems
General Soreness
There will be some general soreness in the mouth. This can be relieved by rinsing with a warm saltwater mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in five ounces of warm water and rinse your mouth vigorously. If the tenderness is severe, take aspirin, ibuprofen or whatever you normally take for pain. Soreness should end by the third or fourth day.
Loosening of Teeth
This is to be expected throughout treatment. This is normal since the teeth are being moved into their new position. The teeth will be rigidly fixed into their new position when treatment is finished.
Eating
Be careful to protect the orthodontic appliances when you eat. Faithfully follow our instructions on foods to avoid. For the first day or so soft foods will be easier to eat. Avoid tough meats, hard breads, and raw vegetables plus any other foods that can cause problems. Also do not chew on pens, ice or hard objects. A nutritious and balanced diet is essential for good oral health and orthodontic tooth movement. For a more detailed list, visit our Foods to Avoid page.
Loose Wire or Band
If a wire, band or bracket comes loose, don’t be alarmed: this happens occasionally. If a wire is sticking out and is irritating, use the eraser tip of a pencil and carefully push the wire in and away from the cheek or gum. If the irritation continues, use wax in the area. Telephone the office as soon as possible for an appointment to check and repair the appliances. If any piece comes off, save it and bring it with you to the office.
Athletics
If you take part in athletics, we suggest a mouth guard. In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and appliances right away. If any thing is loose or broken please call for an emergency appointment so any repairs can be made.
