First Visit
We look forward to meeting you on your first visit to our office. During this time, we will help you get acquainted with our office and learn about your orthodontic treatment. We understand that each patient's orthodontic treatment is different, and we promise to give you the personal attention you deserve. Your first orthodontic visit will consist of an examination and discussion of potential treatment options. This important visit will address your orthodontic needs to determine if this is the proper time to begin treatment.
After we have evaluated your records, we conduct a treatment consultation to explain all aspects of your treatment in detail. We will provide a complete clinical diagnosis regarding the nature of the problem, a written summary of the findings and a detailed plan that outlines your treatment, goals and estimated fees. We encourage questions from both the patient and the parent, and as such, we provide ample time to answer your questions.
After you have started orthodontic treatment, here are a few hints to help you get through the first several days with a minimum of discomfort:
- There will be some general soreness in the mouth. This can be relieved by rinsing with a warm saltwater mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in eight ounces of warm water and rinse your mouth vigorously. If the tenderness is severe, take aspirin, ibuprofen or whatever you normally take for pain. Soreness should end by the third or fourth day.
- Be careful to protect the orthodontic appliances when you eat. Faithfully follow our instructions on foods to avoid. For the first day or so soft foods will be easier to eat. Avoid tough meats, hard breads, and raw vegetables plus any other foods that can cause problems. Also do not chew on pens, ice or hard objects. A nutritious and balanced diet is essential for good oral health and orthodontic tooth movement.
- If a wire, band or bracket comes loose, don’t be alarmed. This happens occasionally. If a wire is sticking out and is irritating, use the eraser tip of a pencil and carefully push the wire in and away from the cheek or gum. If the irritation continues, use wax in the area. Telephone the office as soon as possible for an appointment to check and repair the appliances. If any piece comes off, save it and bring it with you to the office.
- If you take part in athletics, we suggest a mouth guard. In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and appliances right away. If anything is loose or broken please call for an emergency appointment so any repairs can be made.
- Expect your teeth to loosen a little throughout treatment. This is normal since the teeth are being moved into their new position. The teeth will be rigidly fixed into their new position when treatment is finished.
